Integrations and reliability

Plan for failed workflows and safe recovery

Make failures visible and recover without repeating completed business actions.

Understand the process

A reliable automation includes a recovery process. An expired credential, changed field or unavailable API can interrupt a workflow after some actions already succeeded. The operator needs enough context to decide what should be retried and what needs correction.

How to approach the implementation

1

Define useful failure information

Capture the workflow, execution reference, affected business record and failed step. Limit sensitive data in alerts and link authorised operators to the detailed record.

2

Separate failure types

Temporary availability issues may justify a bounded retry. Invalid data, missing permissions and changed business rules usually need correction first.

3

Check for partial success

Before recovery, verify whether the destination already created a record or sent a message. Continue from a known state rather than assuming the whole execution did nothing.

4

Assign an operating routine

Agree who responds, how urgent each workflow is and when to use the manual fallback. Include periodic access reviews and regression checks after integration changes.

What to prepare

  • Named workflow owner and backup
  • Action identifiers and execution records
  • An agreed manual fallback

Watch out for

A green workflow status does not prove the intended business outcome occurred. Check destination records and meaningful completion states.

How to check whether it is working

Track failures, recovery time, repeated side effects and business cases waiting for manual action.
