To make a website eligible for Google AI Overviews, start with indexable pages, search-snippet eligibility and the site’s Search generative AI inclusion setting. Then improve the usefulness of the information. Eligibility does not guarantee that Google will select a page for any particular answer.
This is a diagnostic checklist for a business website, not a ranking formula. It complements our broader AI-answers guide and focuses on decisions a website owner or developer can actually inspect.
Start with the exact page, not just the domain
Pick one article, product or service URL that should answer a real customer question. In Search Console, inspect that URL and check the indexed version and selected canonical. A sitemap containing a URL is not proof that the URL has been indexed.
Then open the page on mobile. Can a reader understand its answer before a form, overlay or unrelated introduction gets in the way? Can they follow the evidence and take the next step? Those questions expose practical content and usability problems without needing to guess at an AI ranking signal.
Check the Search generative AI setting
Google’s current documentation describes a Search generative AI control under Search Console Settings. Confirm the relevant property is included, and review any inherited setting from a parent property. Inclusion is the default for properties without an overriding exclusion; this control is separate from model-training choices. See Google’s control documentation.
Record who checked the setting and when. If a different team manages Search Console, ask them for confirmation of the effective setting for the exact property rather than assuming the marketing team’s access covers every subdomain. Do not change unrelated privacy or training preferences as part of this check.
Review technical eligibility before rewriting the article
Google’s generative AI search guide builds on normal search requirements: an indexed page eligible for a snippet, useful content and an accessible technical foundation. Use this worksheet to turn that principle into a review:
- Response: does the final URL return the intended content with a successful response?
- Access: are robots rules, login requirements or a firewall preventing intended access?
- Indexing: is the page excluded by an intentional noindex directive or an unexpected canonical?
- Content: is essential information readable as text, with supporting images where helpful?
- Discovery: can visitors reach it through relevant links from the rest of the website?
Our SEO checker can inspect some public HTML signals. It does not replace Search Console, report Google’s selected canonical, or certify eligibility for AI answers. Use the canonical checker for a focused check of declared URL signals.
Publish an answer with evidence and useful limits
Consider a hypothetical buyer asking whether a five-page website can support online payments. A useful page would explain when a hosted payment link is enough, when a cart and order system are needed, and which responsibilities stay with the business. It would identify the assumptions behind its recommendation. It would not imply that every project needs the same stack.
Try this editorial review on your selected page:
- Write the customer’s decision in one sentence.
- Check that the page answers it directly.
- Add one original element that helps make the decision: a comparison, a worked example, a real screenshot, a tested checklist or a documented limitation.
- Separate observed facts from estimates and recommendations.
- Remove claims that have no supporting evidence.
- Give readers a relevant next step rather than forcing a sales form before the answer.
These are our editing recommendations for useful business content. They are not a prescribed format that guarantees Google citations. If a page already answers the question well, improve the missing evidence instead of rewriting every paragraph to sound “AI optimised”.
Do you need llms.txt, special schema or hundreds of FAQs?
Google says there is no special AI markup requirement and that it ignores llms.txt for Google Search. Its guide also rejects a mandatory content-chunking format. Keep appropriate structured data accurate, but do not treat extra schema or repeated question variants as a route to guaranteed inclusion. Source: Google’s mythbusting guidance.
A sensible FAQ answers questions visitors actually ask. A useful service page explains scope and fit. A large batch of pages that differ mainly in a place name or prompt wording can create a maintenance burden without supplying new value.
How should you measure progress?
Google documents a Generative AI performance report for impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It may not appear when there are insufficient impressions. Review it alongside ordinary search performance and your own enquiry data; an impression is not a visit or a qualified lead.
Our suggested review schedule is weekly for implementation errors and monthly for broader content decisions. This is a management cadence, not a promised time to rank. Keep a change log so you know whether a shift followed a content update, a technical fix or a change in how you measured.
What to do when the page still does not appear
If the page is not indexed, investigate indexing first. If it is indexed but excluded from AI features, review the relevant control. If it is eligible and useful but not selected in your sample of answers, compare the question with the information the page actually provides. Do not respond to one missing citation by rebuilding the whole website.
Frequently asked questions
Is an AI Overview citation the same as ranking first?
No. A citation in a generated answer and a position in ordinary search results are different observations. Track each for the page and query you tested.
Can an SEO checker confirm AI Overview inclusion?
No. A checker can identify some technical issues. Inclusion and observed visibility need platform-specific evidence.
Does a missing AI report mean the website is blocked?
Not necessarily. Google lists insufficient impressions as a reason the report may not appear. Check access and settings rather than making that assumption.
